The men's section of the Brno Maccabi sports club

This photograph was most likely taken in Brno in the 1930s. I have no idea who is concretely in the photo. But I assume that it could be a group photo of the men's section of the Brno Maccabi sports club.

Before World War II, most Brno Jews were members of the Maccabi sports club, which was located on Legionnaires' Street, today's Avenue of Captain Jaros. This sports club had several sections, I think the men's, women's and youths'. My parents went to Maccabi to exercise when they were young, they also met there. My father, Bedrich Hertzka, devoted himself to sports after his marriage as well, and his friends were usually also members of Maccabi.

My sister, Marketa, and I, as young ladies before World War II spent a lot of time in Maccabi. The sports club organized various sports activities: gymnastics, tennis, swimming, in winter skiing and later also horseback riding. I didn't play tennis very well, but I did like skiing. My favorite was horseback riding. I devoted myself to it for only a relatively short time, because when World War II broke out, Maccabi ceased to function.
