The leadership of Maccabi in Varna

This photo of the leadership of Maccabi in Varna was taken in 1935. Sitting from left to right are: Nissim Baruh, deputy chief of Maccabi. Sitting in the middle is Isak Romano, chief of Maccabi. Later he emigrated to Israel and I heard he died. I do not remember the other people sitting. Standing from left to right are: Solomon Musacho, leader of one of the smaller groups. He was a very kind man. He left illegally for Israel as early as 1948. We were close friends. The authorities wanted to banish his parents from Bulgaria because they were Turkish citizens and leave them in the so-called 'no-man's land' between the Bulgarian and the Turkish state. Pantev treated them in the most cruel way - did not allow them to take any luggage. Later Pantev was killed. Next to Moni Musacho is Mati Toledo. Now she lives in Israel. I met her in Israel in 1965 when I was with my two brothers David and Perets and two more people living in Israel. We went there because my mother grieved a lot for my father who had just died. My mother saw us and died five or six days later. And this woman we called Butsi. She was very kind. We met her by accident in Israel.
